About the Board of Child Care

The Board of Child is a nonprofit multi-service organization serving close to 1,700 children and their families each year throughout Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Making a difference for children and families requires an unwavering commitment by scores of staff, the Board of Directors, and volunteers.

These core values lead the way:

Service

Helping vulnerable children is the reason the Board of Child Care was founded in 1874—and this same unwavering focus continues 132 years later. Since the agency’s founding, the needs of children and families have changed dramatically, both in severity of problems and increased numbers. Children and families affected by poverty, abuse, neglect, and developmental difficulties require a multi-tiered array of services that are delivered by staff who are trained to diagnose and treat complex problems with compassion.

Leadership

The Board of Child Care is blessed with talented leaders and staff, which creates a rich environment to provide the best and most appropriate care to children and families. But leadership does not stop at the boundaries of the agency’s doors. To ensure more successful futures for greater numbers of children and families, staff share their talents—nationally, regionally, and locally.

Faith

The Board of Child Care has remained steadfast and true to the agency’s roots as an outreach ministry of The United Methodist Church. The work of the staff, the Board of Directors, and the many volunteers reflect the strong historical ties and legacy for spiritual expression. Throughout the agency, children are given a variety of opportunities to participate in spiritual life activities that enrich their personal growth and provide comfort to them during times of personal distress and change.

Excellence

The Board of Child Care ensures that children and families receive care that meets the highest standards by attaining accreditation through nationally recognized organizations. The agency meets and surpasses (with honors) the standards of excellence by national accrediting bodies: the Educational Assessment Guidelines Leading toward Excellence (EAGLE), the Council on Accreditation for Families and Children (COA), and the National Commission for Accreditation of Special Education (NCASES).
